GEOPOLITICS • Sunday night
The strikes were called off. The oil price answered first.
Crude fell more than 4% before Monday’s open after President Trump cancelled what he described as “massive” strikes on Iran and announced talks beginning today.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said of the Iranians: “They knew the extent of the attack because they saw it forming.” Markets took the reversal as a signal that the Strait of Hormuz risk premium can come out of the price.
The relief showed up everywhere at once. US futures rose — the Dow up 0.36%, the S&P 0.41%, the Nasdaq 0.89%. South Korea’s Kospi jumped a record 18%. Gold eased slightly to $4,105.50 as the safe-haven bid came off.
Here’s why it lands on your desk: this is the third time in five weeks the oil price has swung double digits on a headline rather than a barrel. If your energy exposure is sized for the news cycle rather than the supply picture, weeks like this are how it gets away from you.
